Born in New York and raised in New York City, Gail Weissman moved to San Francisco in her twenties and has lived primarily in Marin County, California ever since.

She studied at the School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York and the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI), where she focused on drawing and printmaking. She later earned a master’s degree in Arts and Consciousness from John F. Kennedy University.

Although formally trained in drawing and printmaking, she considers herself a self-trained painter. Painting became the place where she developed her own visual language through observation, practice, and years of working directly from nature.

The natural world is at the center of her work. She is interested in how things are made, how everything moves through cycles of growth and change, and how light and atmosphere transform a landscape. She looks for moments of transition—the fog rolling across the hills, shifting light, or colors that seem to move from one state to another.

Her abstract paintings explore the elemental forces of creation and destruction that shape the planet. They are inspired by natural processes rather than specific places, expressing energy, movement, and transformation.

Her still lifes, plein air paintings, and portraits have a different purpose. They are about paying attention to the present moment and capturing what is there, as it is, before it changes.
